As a result of hybridization of plants with red and white flowers, all hybrid plants

As a result of hybridization of plants with red and white flowers, all hybrid plants had pink flowers. Record the genotype of the parent plants. What is the nature of the research?

This problem demonstrates the phenomenon of intermediate inheritance of a trait, also called incomplete dominance. It consists in the appearance in heterozygotes of a third, different from the parental individuals, intermediate in value of the trait. In this case, such a sign is the pink color of the flowers of daughter plants.

Let’s designate the gene that causes the red color of plant flowers as C, the gene for their white color as c. The genotypes of plants with pink flowers will be designated as Cc.

In order for all offspring to be represented by heterozygotes (Cc), it is necessary that the parent plants produce the same type of gametes, one containing the gene for red color of flowers (C), and the other containing the gene for white color (c). Therefore, the parent plants must be homozygous.

The homozygous CC plant has red flowers and produces C.

The homozygous cc plant has white flowers and produces the same type of germ cells c.

When they are crossed with each other, a uniform offspring of Cc heterozygotes with flowers that have a pink color – Cc will be obtained.
