The first Italian kingdom was formed at the same time as Napoleon was declared emperor as a junior partner in the union with France. The Second Kingdom of Italy emerged from a series of wars between the Kingdom of Sardinia-Piedmont in 1861. The name Risorgimento stuck behind these wars. In the course of these events, the Savoyard dynasty subdued the Apennine Peninsula and drove the French and Habsburgs out of Italy.
