| At a vibration frequency of 1000 Hz, the wavelength of sound in steel is 5 m. Determine the speed of sound propagation in steel.
The speed of sound v, the vibration frequency f and the wavelength λ are related by a simple relationship:
λ = v / f (1).
From (1) we find the speed of sound v:
v = λ * f (2).
Substitute in (2) the values from the condition:
v = 1000 Hz * 5 m = 15000 m / s.
Answer: the speed of sound in steel is 5000 m / s.
