To calculate the change in light at some point in space, we use the formula: k = Δd / λ.
Variables: Δd – optical path difference of the given waves (Δd = 0.5 mm = 0.5 * 10: -3 m); λ – wavelength (λ = 500 nm = 5 * 10: -7 m).
Let’s calculate: k = Δd / λ = 0.5 * 10: -3 / (5 * 10: -7) = 1000 (integer).
