Almost in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, at an equal distance from the American continents, Eurasia and Africa, the Atlantic Ridge is located, which arose as a result of the movement of lithospheric plates.

This territory is a seismically active zone, as a result of which, the height of the peaks of some of the underwater volcanoes reaches 2000 meters.

On both sides of the ridge, there are extended basins with a predominantly flat and smooth bottom.

The maximum ocean depth is in the Puerto Rico trench and reaches 8,700 meters.
