A. Nikitin began his journey in the Tver principality, from where he and his companions went down the Volga and sailed to the Caspian Sea, which was the first of the three seas described in Nikitin’s book. Then he went to Iran, and then to India, where he saw the second sea – the Arabian. Nikitin decided to return to his homeland in a different way and went to the Ottoman Empire, in the north of which he met the third sea – the Black, which he crossed quite close to his hometown, but did not reach it.
