Drought tolerant plants have a number of characteristics:
1. Thorns as modified leaves to save water
2. Fleshy leaves with aquifer cells that store moisture
3. The core root system reaches great depths where groundwater is located
4. May have a very ramified and spreading fibrous root system that serves more as a collection of moisture than a means of attachment

Moisture-loving plants:
1. They have long, wide leaves, because they do not need to save water
2. Often have small flowers under the leaves so that they do not interfere with evaporation
3. A large number of stomata on the leaves
