| Calculate how many grams of magnesium chloride is formed by the interaction of magnesium weighing 2.4 grams with dilute hydrochloric acid.
m is the mass of the substance
v – amount of substance
Mr – molecular weight
Mg + 2HCl = MgCl2 + H2
To find the amount of magnesium, we use the formula v = m / Mr.
Mr (Mg) = 24 g / mol
v (Mg) = 2.4 / 24 = 0.1 mol
Magnesium chloride will have the same amount of substance:
v (MgCl2) = 0.1 mol
Mr (MgCl2) = 95 g / mol
m (MgCl2) = 0.1 * 95 = 9.5 g
Answer: The mass of magnesium chloride is 9.5 grams.
