Calculate the area of a rectangle with a side of 6 cm and a diagonal of 10 cm.

The task:
width of rectangle b – 6 centimeters,
diagonal c – 10 centimeters,
the area of the rectangle S -? square centimeters.
Solution:
1) calculate the length of the rectangle using the Pythagorean theorem:
c ^ 2 = a ^ 2 + b ^ 2,
a ^ 2 = c ^ 2 – b ^ 2 = 10 ^ 2 – 6 ^ 2 = 100 – 36 = 64,
a = 8 centimeters;
2) define the area of the rectangle:
S = a b = 8 6 = 48 square centimeters.
Answer: the area of the rectangle is S = 48 cm ^ 2.
