| Calculate the mass and amount of carbon monoxide (iv) substance formed during the complete combustion of 36 g of coal.
The combustion reaction of carbon is described by the following chemical reaction equation:
C + O2 = CO2;
From one mole of carbon, one mole of carbon dioxide is formed.
Let’s find the amount of the substance contained in 36 grams of coal.
N C = 36/12 = 3 mol;
During the reaction, 3 mol of carbon dioxide will be formed.
Let’s find its mass.
The molar mass of carbon dioxide is:
M CO2 = 12 + 16 x 2 = 44 grams / mol;
The mass of carbon dioxide will be:
m CO2 = 3 x 44 = 132 grams;
