Calculate the mass fraction of the yield of acetic acid if, during the oxidation

Calculate the mass fraction of the yield of acetic acid if, during the oxidation of 400 m3 of butane, 1000 kg of acid 2СН3-СН2-СН2-СН3 + 5О2 – 4СН3- СООН + 2Н2О were obtained.

To solve the problem, we will perform calculations according to the equation:
1. 2С4Н10 + 5О2 = 4СН3 – СООН + 2Н2О – the oxidation reaction of butane leads to the formation of acetic (ethanic) acid;
2. Let’s translate the units of volume:
1 m3 – 1000 l;
400 m3 butane – 400,000 l.
Weight units:
1000 kg. acetic acid – 1,000,000 g
3. We make calculations according to the formulas:
M (C4H10) = 58 g / mol;
M (CH3COOH) = 84g / mol
4. Determine the amount of moles of butane, acetic acid:
1 mol of gas at normal level – 22.4 liters;
X mol (C4H10) – 400,000 liters. hence, X mol (C4H10) = 1 * 400000 / 22.4 = 17857 mol;
17857 mol (C4H10) – X mol (CH3COOH);
-2 mol – 4 mol from here, X mol (CH3COOH) = 17857 * 4/2 = 35714 mol.
5. Find the mass of the reaction product-CH3COOH:
m (CH3COOH) = Y * M = 35714 * 84 = 2999976 g.
6. Let’s calculate the product yield according to the formula:
W = m (practical) / m (theoretical) * 100;
W = 1,000,000 / 2999976 * 100 = 33.33%
Answer: the mass fraction of the yield of acetic acid is 33.33%.
