Calculate the mass of acetaldehyde obtained by the Kucherov method from 200 g

Calculate the mass of acetaldehyde obtained by the Kucherov method from 200 g of technical calcium carbide, in which the mass fraction of CaC2 = 88%.

To solve, we write down the Kucherov reaction equation:
1. CaC2 + 2H2O = Ca (OH) 2 + C2H2 – hydration of calcium carbide, acetylene obtained;
2. С2Н2 + Н2О = Н2С = СН – ОН = Н3С – СОН – during the reaction, vinyl alcohol is formed as an intermediate product, which undergoes isomerization and acetaldehyde is released.
Let’s determine the molar masses of substances:
M (CaC2) = 64 g / mol;
M (C2H4O) = 44 g / mol;
We find the mass of CaC2 by the formula:
W = m (practical) / m (theoretical) * 100;
m (practical) = 0.88 * 200 = 176 g.
Determine the number of mol CaC2:
Y (CaC2) = m / M = 176/64 = 2.75 mol;
According to the equation, the number of moles of CaC2, C2H4O is equal to 1 mol, which means that Y (C2H4O) = 4 mol.
Let’s calculate the mass of acetaldehyde:
m (C2H4O) = Y * M = 2.75 * 44 = 121 g.
Answer: the mass of acetaldehyde is 121 g.
