Calculate the mass of magnesium silicate formed by the interaction of 20 g of magnesium

Calculate the mass of magnesium silicate formed by the interaction of 20 g of magnesium oxide with an excess of silicon oxide (4).

The reaction to obtain magnesium silicate is described by the following equation:

MgO + SiO2 = MgSiO3;

Let’s calculate the chemical amount of magnesium oxide:

For this purpose, we divide its weight by the mass of 1 mole of the substance.

M MgO = 24 + 16 = 40 grams / mol;

N MgO = 20/40 = 0.5 mol;

We calculate the weight of 0.5 mol of magnesium silicate.

To do this, multiply the amount of the substance by its molar weight.

M MgSiO3 = 24 + 28 + 16 x 3 = 100 grams / mol;

m MgSiO3 = 0.5 x 100 = 50 grams;
