Calculate the mass of the precipitate formed by the interaction of 16 g of copper sulfate with potassium hydroxide.

To calculate the mass of the sediment, it is worth, for a start, write the reaction equation:

CuSO4 + 2KOH = K2SO4 + Cu (OH) 2 (we always deliver the missing coefficients);

We have 16 grams of copper sulfate. And this means that we can, through the given mass, find its quantity (n):

n (CuSO4) = m (CuSO4): M (CuSO4) = 16 g: 160 g / mol = 0.1 mol (the amount of substance is measured in moles);

Now we need to move on to Cu (OH) 2, since it is he who precipitates. n (Cu (OH) 2) = n (CuSO4) = 0.1 mol (since there is a factor of 1 in front of both substances). Therefore, the mass of copper hydroxide is:

m (Cu (OH) 2) = n (Cu (OH) 2) * M (Cu (OH) 2) = 0.1 mol * 98 g / mol = 9.8 g.
