Calculate the volume of carbon dioxide that is released during the fermentation of glucose
Calculate the volume of carbon dioxide that is released during the fermentation of glucose, if the mass of the ethanol obtained is 6, 9 grams. As well as a lot of glucose.
Let us write the equation for the reaction of alcoholic fermentation of glucose.
C6H12O6 = 2C2H5OH + 2CO2
Let us find the number of moles of ethanol, knowing its mass (6.9 g).
n (C2H5OH) = m / M = 6.9 / 46 = 0.15 mol.
According to the reaction equation, from 1 mol of glucose, 2 mol of ethanol and carbon dioxide are obtained. From x mol of glucose, 0.15 mol of ethanol is obtained. Let’s make a proportion.
1 mol glucose – 2 mol ethanol
x mol of glucose – 0.15 mol of ethanol
x (C6H12O6) = 0.075 mol
n (C2H5OH) = n (CO2) = 0.15 mol.
Let’s calculate the amount of CO2 generated under normal conditions.
V (CO2) = n * Vm = 0.15 * 22.4 = 3.36 liters.
Let’s calculate the mass of glucose.
m (C6H12O6) = n * M = 0.075 * 180 = 13.5 g
