Calculate the volume of hydrogen released when 48 g of magnesium reacts with sulfuric acid
May 2, 2021 | education
| The active element, metallic magnesium, when it enters sulfuric acid, dissolves in it with the release of bubbles of hydrogen gas. The chemical process is described by the following equation:
Mg + H2SO4 = MgSO4 + H2 ↑;
Find the molar amount of magnesium, which is expressed in moles.
To do this, we divide its mass by the weight of 1 mole of metallic magnesium (its molar weight).
M Mg = 24 grams per mole;
N Mg = 48/24 = 2 mol;
The same equivalent amount of hydrogen will be synthesized.
Determine the volume of hydrogen gas.
For this purpose, we multiply the amount of substance by the volume of 1 mole of gas (filling 22.40 liters).
V H2 = 2 x 22.4 = 44.8 liters;
