| The decomposition reaction of sodium nitrate is described by the following chemical reaction equation:
2NaNO3 = 2NaNO2 + O2;
From two moles of sodium nitrate, one mole of oxygen is formed.
Determine the molar amount of 8.5 grams of sodium nitrate.
Its molar mass is:
M NaNO3 = 23 + 14 + 16 x 3 = 85 grams / mol;
Let’s determine the amount of substance:
N NaNO3 = 8.5 / 85 = 0.1 mol;
During the reaction, 0.1 / 2 = 0.05 mol of oxygen is formed.
Under normal conditions, one mole of ideal gas takes up a volume of 22.4 liters.
Determine the volume of oxygen:
V O2 = 0.05 x 22.4 = 1.12 liters;
