Can a person live outside of society?

There are quite a few literary and factual examples of how people for various reasons (independently or as a result of accidents, catastrophes) found themselves cut off from society. By their example, they proved that a person can live without society, although at the same time there was a high probability of a certain “wildness”. But society as a whole cannot live if every individual becomes a hermit, because there will be no opportunity to extend their lineage, and many simply will not have the resources to survive.
