Can piston pumps operate in an airless environment?

In a space where there is no air, piston pumps will not be able to operate.

Piston pumps are suction pumps, and they cannot work without a difference in pressure, the liquid in them can only come from pressure. Pressure pumps can operate without air. In a piston pump, the principle of operation is as follows – water in the tube rises behind the piston only under the action of pressure from the atmosphere, then it lifts the bottom valve and fills the pump cylinder.
