Can steel be melted in a lead spoon?

It is impossible to melt steel in a lead spoon, since the melting point of lead (tm. = 327.4 ºС) is significantly lower than the melting temperature of steel (tm. = 1300 … 1500 ºС), i.e. the lead spoon will melt much earlier than steel. That is why refractory materials are used to melt steel in smelting furnaces. For example, a graphite crucible used in induction furnaces can withstand temperatures up to 3845 … 3890 ºС.
