| Carbon dioxide was passed through 80 g of a solution with a mass fraction of sodium hydroxide of 12% until sodium carbonate was formed. Calculate the volume of the reacted gas.
Let’s write the reaction equation:
2NaOH + CO2 = Na2CO3 + H2O
Let’s find the mass of NaOH:
m (NaOH) = mr.-pa (NaOH) * w (NaOH) / 100 = 80 * 12/100 = 9.6 (g).
Let’s find the amount of NaOH substance:
v (NaOH) = m (NaOH) / M (NaOH) = 9.6 / 40 = 0.24 (mol).
According to the reaction equation, 2 mol of NaOH reacts with 1 mol of CO2, therefore:
v (CO2) = v (NaOH) / 2 = 0.24 / 2 = 0.12 (mol).
Thus, the volume of reacted carbon dioxide, measured under normal conditions (n.o.):
V (CO2) = v (CO2) * Vm = 0.12 * 22.4 = 2.688 = 2.7 (L).
