Causes, main events, results of the First World War 1914 – 1918.
Causes:
Contradictions between the leading powers by 1914 in the colonies (Asia and Africa), as well as in Europe (Balkans).
Economic rivalry between Germany and Great Britain.
Two military blocs were formed – the Triple Alliance and the Entente.
Results: 4 empires have disappeared from the world map – Russian, German, Austrian and Ottoman. The Republic of Turkey, Soviet Russia, Austria and Hungary separately from each other, two new Slavic states – Poland and Czechoslovakia – appeared.
Main events: the Battle of the Marne, the Battle of the Somme and Verdun, the autumn offensive of 1918, the Great Retreat of 1915 on the Eastern Front and the Brusilov Breakthrough, as well as the February and October Revolutions in Russia and the Brest Peace.
Left movement intensified.
Germany lost all colonies in Asia and Africa, Turkey – possessions in the Middle East, France, Great Britain and Japan became stronger. Italy was dissatisfied with the outcome of the war; in general, many contradictions remained. The League of Nations appeared.
