Characteristics of brown algae.

Brown algae live mainly in sea water bodies. Only 8 species are known, which in the process of evolution moved to freshwater reservoirs.

All representatives of brown algae have multicellular bodies of various sizes. It can be microscopic in size, and can reach several meters. The body of the algae can consist of plates, threads, sacs or small bushes. The plant is attached to the substrate with a sole, or a system of rhizoids.

In representatives of brown algae, each cell contains many small, well-developed chloroplasts.

Representatives of these algae can reproduce vegetatively, sexually and asexually.

An example of brown algae is sugar kelp (seaweed). Seaweed is the richest source of iodine.
