Asteroids are made of metals and rocky materials, while comets are made of ice, dust and also have some rocky material in their composition. Asteroids formed much closer to the Sun, where temperatures are too high for ice to exist. Comets, in turn, form far from the Sun, where it is cold and ice does not melt, comets have tails, but asteroids do not.
