| Esters hydrolysis:
CH3-C (O) -O-C2H5 + H2O → CH3COOH + C2H5OH
* The reaction is reversible, and the reverse reaction is esterification.
Alkaline hydrolysis of esters (saponification):
CH3-C (O) -O-C2H5 + NaOH → CH3COONa + C2H5OH
* This reaction is already irreversible.
Hydrogenation of esters:
CH3COOC3H7 + 4 [H] → CH3CH2OH + C3H7OH
Combustion of esters:
CH3COOC2H5 + 5O2 → 4CO2 + 4H2O
