Classification of organic compounds?

Depending on the arrangement of carbon atoms in their structure, organic compounds are broadly classified into: compounds of acyclic or open chains and cyclic or closed compounds.

Acyclic or open chain connections. Carbon atoms are present in an open chain. This chain can be either straight or branched. They were originally known as aliphatic compounds because compounds in this class were obtained from either animal or vegetable fats.

Cyclic or closed chain connections. They are marked by the presence in their structure of one or more closed chains or rings of atoms.
