The independence of Portugal was proclaimed in 1822 on September 7. Brazil became an empire, which existed before the ratification of the republican government which took place in 1889 on November 15. The Portuguese king, João VI, held the title of Brazilian Emperor under the terms of a treaty that recognized Brazil’s independence.
