Compare the functions of the gametophyte and the sporophyte in the fern.

Sporophyte and gametophyte are the life forms of spore plants, constantly alternating in their life cycle. Fern sporophyte is a leafy plant, that is, the fern itself. On the underside of its leaves, sporangia form in spring in which spores mature. Ferns spread by spores.
The spore grows and forms a small green plate – a gametophyte, on the inner side of which gametes are formed. Fertilization takes place with water. A sporophyte is formed from the zygote.
