Conversion of electrical energy into heat.

When current passes through a conductor, not with some kind of resistance, electrically charged particles collide with ions and molecules of the conductor’s substance. In the process of collision, they transfer their kinetic energy, and the conductor heats up. The rate of conversion of kinetic energy into heat is characterized by power, and the amount of heat released is described by the Joule-Lenz law.
