Define a linear function by the formula, the graph of which is parallel to the straight line y = -5x + 8 and passes through the point with coordinates 0; -8.

The general equation of a straight line passing through a given point A (x1, y1) in a given direction determined by the slope k is known,

y – y1 = k (x – x1).

In our example, a straight line parallel to y = -5x + 8 will have a slope of -5. Therefore, we must equate the straight line passing through point A (0, -8) with a given slope of -5.

y – (-8) = -5 (x – 0) → y + 8 = -5x → y + 5x + 8 = 0.

Answer: y + 5x + 8 = 0.
