Describe how the alliance of Frankish kings and popes of Rome was built.

The rapprochement of the Frankish kings with the leaders of the Roman Catholic Church began from the time of the first king of the Franks, Clovis Meroving, when the overwhelming majority of the Franks, following the example of Clovis, converted to Christianity.

The alliance of the Popes with the Frankish kings was formed during the era of Charlemagne. Charlemagne supported Pope Adrian I, in response the Pope “illuminated” the reign of Charles and confirmed the right of succession to the throne of the Frankish kingdom by Charles’s descendants. Subsequently, all Frankish rulers received a “blessing” from the popes.
