Describe Rutherford’s experience according to the plan: 1) Purpose of the experiment 2) Conditions for conducting the experiment 3) Conducting the experiment 4) Conclusions

1) Purpose:
Explore the internal structure of atoms
2) Conditions for the experiment:
– the use of α-particles with a kinetic energy of about 5 MeV (ionized helium atoms);
– radioactive substances were emitted from the lead container;
– use of a zinc sulphide coated screen
3) Experiment:
A focused beam of alpha particles, flying at great speed, was directed towards the thinnest gold foil. A luminescent screen was located behind the foil. When particles collided with it, flashes arose that could be observed through a microscope.
4) Conclusions:
Rutherford’s experiments led to the conclusion that in the center of the atom there is a dense positively charged nucleus, the diameter of which does not exceed 10 ^ -14–10 ^ -15 m. It has been proved that Thompson’s model is incorrect.
