Describe the actions of the USSR during the 1956 crisis in Hungary.

During the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, the USSR acted actively and unprecedentedly harshly towards the revolutionaries. 30,000 Soviet soldiers, 380 armored personnel carriers and over 1,000 tanks were sent to suppress the uprising. the rebels attacked Soviet tanks brought into Budapest using Molotov cocktails, and occasionally fired rifles at the Soviet soldiers from the roofs of nearby houses. The Soviet army responded with powerful return fire, including from guns and machine guns.
