Describe the earth’s magnetic field.

The earth is surrounded by a magnetic force field generated by electric currents in molten iron that flows in the outer core of our planet.

People do not feel this, but the compass needles are moved by this force and swing towards magnetic north.

The magnetic poles are not aligned with the North and South Poles, also called geographic poles, which are located on the Earth’s axis of rotation.

The difference between magnetic north and true north is about 11 degrees. Over the past century or so, scientists have discovered that the direction of the geomagnetic field is slowly wandering around.
