Describe the main properties of the nervous tissue.

The main properties of the nervous tissue: conductivity, excitability, lability. These properties determine the functional state of the nervous system.

Excitability – the ability of the nervous tissue to react very quickly to irritation. In the course of evolutionary development, the cells of the nervous tissue have learned to quickly respond to the action of the stimulus. Excitation of the nervous tissue is associated with a change in metabolism and is accompanied by the appearance of electrical, or nerve impulses.

Conductivity is the ability of the nervous tissue to conduct excitation. Conductivity is associated with the spread of excitation processes in the tissue. Arising in any cell, an electrical (nerve) impulse is easily transmitted to neighboring cells and to any part of the nervous system.

Violation of these two properties of the nervous tissue, for example, with general anesthesia, inhibits mental processes in the human body and leads to complete loss of consciousness.

Lability is the ability of the excited tissue to react with the maximum number of potentials in response to a certain frequency of stimuli. The lability of a tissue is highly dependent on its functional state. Pathologies and fatigue lead to a decrease in the index of lability of the nervous tissue, and constant systematic training – to its increase.
