Describe the nervous and humoral regulation of respiration.

Respiration regulation is the process of controlling respiratory movements by the body itself in order to maintain the respiratory norms of the internal environment and adapt to its changes. There are two types of regulation. Nervous regulation of breathing is voluntary (a person can speed up and hold his breath) and involuntary (night breathing). The centers of involuntary regulation are located in the medulla oblongata, voluntary – in the cerebral cortex. The humoral regulates the rate and depth of breathing. An excess of carbon dioxide accelerates it, and its lack slows it down.
