Describe the properties of mushrooms.

Fungi are eukaryotic, i.e. their cells contain a membrane-bound nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Fungi have cell walls (plants also have cell walls, but animals do not). The cell walls of fungi are made up mostly of a carbohydrate called chitin, while the walls of plants are made up mostly of cellulose. Fungi are achlorophyllic, which means they lack the chlorophyll pigments present in chloroplasts in plant cells, which are essential for photosynthesis. Therefore, fungi are incapable of photosynthesis.
