Conifers provide all softwood, which is the main construction timber of the temperate regions and accounts for about 45% of the world’s lumber production. Conifers have always had many general and special uses. The dominance of softwood in lumber construction in northern temperate regions has been extended to include composite products such as plywood, particle board and particle board. Other processed softwood products include paper and plastics made from chemically processed wood pulp from spruce.
