Determinant of the peculiarities of French foreign policy. After World War II?

After the war, France tried to maintain a more independent position. At the very beginning, it joins NATO, but nevertheless deals with its colonial problems on its own. In the second period of Charles de Gaulle’s reign, she leaves the NATO military bloc. In this connection, she manages to improve her relations with the USSR. Only in the 1990s did France return to NATO. But he still tries not to take part in active hostilities, with the exception of the Libyan operation, in which French aviation was involved.
