Determine the area s of each of the plates of a flat capacitor with an air gap of d = 3.0 mm

Determine the area s of each of the plates of a flat capacitor with an air gap of d = 3.0 mm, if its capacitance is c = 5.0 pF.

Initial data: d (air gap between the capacitor plates) = 3 mm (3 * 10-3 m); C (capacitance) = 5 pF (5 * 10-12 F).

Constants: ε (dielectric constant of air) = 1; ε0 (electrical constant) = 8.85 * 10-12 C2 / (N * m2).

The area of each of the capacitor plates is determined from the formula for calculating the electrical capacity of a flat capacitor: С = ε * ε0 * S / d, whence S = С * d / (ε * ε0).

Calculation: S = 5 * 10-12 * 3 * 10-3 / (1 * 8.85 * 10-12) = 1.69 * 10-3 m = 1.69 mm.
