The highest valence of phosphorus is equal to the number of the group in which it is located – 5, and the lowest can be found by subtracting the number of the group in which phosphorus is located 8 – 5 = 3 from the total number of groups. Thus, the oxidation state of phosphorus can be in the range from +5 to -3, but there are exceptions. In the P2O5 compound, the oxidation state of phosphorus is +5, and oxygen is -2. The highest valence of oxygen is 6, the lowest is 2. The valence of hydrogen is 1, the highest valence of sulfur is 6, the lowest is 2. In the H2S compound, the oxidation state of sulfur is -2, and that of hydrogen is +1. The valence of calcium is 2, the highest valency of chlorine is 7, the lowest is 1. In the CaCl2 compound, the oxidation state of calcium is +2, and of sulfur, -1.
