Determine the structure of the C4H8O compound if it is known that when heated with copper hydroxide, a brick-red precipitate is formed. Write the reaction equation.

According to the rational formula C4H8O, it is clear that the substance contains 4 carbon atoms and a carbonyl group with a polar double bond> C = O. The fact that this is an aldehyde is indicated by a qualitative reaction to the aldehyde group with copper hydroxide, as a result of which an orange-red precipitate of copper oxide precipitates. Such a reaction does not work with ketones. Thus, we find out that C4H8O is butanal (CH3-CH2-CH2-CH = O).

C4H8O + 2Cu (OH) 2 = C3H7COOH + Cu2O + 2H2O.
