Do you think the Romans did the right thing with Carthage?

The war between Rome and Carthage began because both wanted to conquer Sicily. Carthage was a strong adversary, and if he managed to capture Sicily, then dominance in the Mediterranean would be ensured, and Carthage would become even more powerful.
Nevertheless, Rome acted very cruelly towards the inhabitants of Carthage. After all, they agreed to surrender, took out all the weapons that were in the city. But the Romans set conditions under which the weak townspeople were forced to fight. And when they weakened, seized the city, burned it, the survivors were sold into slavery.
So Rome resolved the issue with its rival.
