Does the cell contain the most proteins or carbohydrates?

There are more proteins. Proteins, nucleic acids and most carbohydrates (polysaccharides) are macromolecules formed by combining (polymerizing) hundreds or thousands of low molecular weight precursors: amino acids, nucleotides, and simple sugars, respectively. Such macromolecules account for 80 to 90% of the dry weight of most cells. The rest of the cell mass consists of many small organic molecules, including macromolecular precursors. Thus, the basic chemistry of cells can be understood in terms of the structures and functions of the four main classes of organic molecules.
