The evolutionary significance of double fertilization is that it enables the embryo to have a huge range of nutrients required for germination. This type of fertilization exists only in angiosperms.

The meaning of such fertilization is that one sperm, merging with the egg, will form a diploid zygote. When the second sperm is fused with the diploid nucleus of the main cell of the embryonic sac, a triploid endosperm is formed. This is the main medium for the nutrition of the embryonic cells.

After fertilization, a seed embryo is formed from the diploid egg. In turn, from the triploid cell – endosperm (nutrient tissue). The seed coat becomes the seed coat.
