When a person ate a very salty herring, the level of salts in the blood and in the intercellular fluid rises and all the water leaves our cells. This is a prime example of plasmolysis. Then the person develops a strong feeling of thirst, he drinks water. The concentration of salts in the intercellular substance decreases, and the water then gradually returns to our cells. This is an example of deplasmolysis.
