Explain the biological role of the cell division process.

In unicellular organisms, cell division is often the only way an organism reproduces. In multicellular organisms, cell division is an integral process of individual development and self-renewal. A special type of cell division is meiosis – the process by which sex cells arise. Sex cells do not divide, but merge into one and a new organism develops from this one cell by division. Without cell division, in principle, it is impossible to imagine life on Earth, even for viruses, for which dividing cells are a way of reproduction.
