Explain the biological role of the cell division process.

| In unicellular organisms, cell division is often the only way an organism reproduces. In multicellular organisms, cell division is an integral process of individual development and self-renewal. A special type of cell division is meiosis – the process by which sex cells arise. Sex cells do not divide, but merge into one and a new organism develops from this one cell by division. Without cell division, in principle, it is impossible to imagine life on Earth, even for viruses, for which dividing cells are a way of reproduction.
