Explain the meaning of population using specific examples.

A population is a collection of individuals of one species, isolated from other individuals of the same species and occupying one specific habitat. All individuals of the population freely interbreed with each other, so they all have a common gene pool. Examples of populations include: a group of jerboas living in the same field, a group of lilies of the valley growing in the same forest, etc. Occasionally, individuals of one population interbreed with individuals of another population, for example, if a person brings an animal or plant to the island.
