Cellular pigments, night length and weather conditions affect the color of the leaves in the fall. Freezing temperatures and chilly winter weather are an annual challenge for trees and deciduous plants. Therefore, perennial plants and trees, including, are equipped with mechanisms designed to protect and enable them to survive in the cold and snowy winter time. To continue to exist in bad weather conditions, the stems, buds and branches have special means of protection. They are needed in order to awaken in the spring with new signs of life. The leaves have a very delicate fabric that is not able to withstand the winter. That is why trees must get rid of the leaves and throw them off themselves, in order to ensure their continued survival.
