The Greeks had a very developed navy. The Greeks constantly waged wars of conquest in the Mediterranean region. Piracy flourished. Communication with the colonies on the other side of the Mediterranean and Black Sea was much cheaper and faster by water. And in the case of the island colonies, there was no other way out.
